The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France.  It was designed by sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi.  It traveled to the United States in 214 packing cases and had to be put together.  When the statue was completed, it was dedicated by President Grover Cleveland on October 28, 1886.
